The next day, the user cannot find the workbook file on his local machine, and so he downloads the workbook again from Tableau Server 2020.3 to perform some updates. No, no, no. That's not how Tableau works. The file format is basically a secret sauce that changes with every new version. He's better off just starting from scratch on the new Desktop version.

Ha! Good luck to him. I bet he's going to spend more time troubleshooting that than actually doing any work. Tableau loves to keep us on our toes with their version compatibility.

Hmm, I'd say no. Tableau is notorious for making breaking changes between versions. The poor guy is going to have to do some major file conversion to get that to work.

Definitely not. The Tableau file format is not backward compatible. He's going to have to upgrade his Desktop to the 2020.3 version to work on that workbook.

No way! If the workbook was published to a newer version of Tableau Server, it won't be compatible with the older Desktop version. I learned that the hard way.
