Hmm, I'd say a 'tough, uncompromising type' is only good if you want to end up in a fistfight with your suppliers. Better to be a smooth talker with a calculator hidden up your sleeve.
Definitely not the 'quality-driven person' - this is all about costs and terms, not quality. Though I do hope they don't sacrifice quality in the process!
I'm not sure a 'tough, uncompromising type' is the way to go. Negotiation is about finding a mutually beneficial agreement, not just steamrolling the other side.
