D) using a dashboard with filters could work, but feels like a workaround. Why not just edit the report type directly?

C) is the way to go. Creating a new report type with the relationship between Event and Contact will give you full access to all the fields you need.

B) seems like the simplest solution to pull in those contact fields. I don't want to get too fancy with formulas or new report types.

I'm not sure, but creating a new report type with event as the primary object and Contact as a related object could also work.
