PECB Exam ISO-9001-Lead-Auditor Topic 5 Question 16 Discussion

Actual exam question for PECB's ISO-9001-Lead-Auditor exam
Question #: 16
Topic #: 5
[All ISO-9001-Lead-Auditor Questions]

A Health Trust has contracted with Servitup, a catering services organisation which has been certified to ISO 9001 for 1 year. It provides services to ten, small rural

hospitals in remote locations involving purchase and storage of dry goods and fresh produce, preparing meals and loading heated trolleys for ward service by hospital

staff. An auditor is conducting the first sole surveillance audit at one site with the Deputy Catering Manager (DCM).

At the closing meeting attended solely by the DCM, the auditor informs him that he has found numerous gaps in the QMS processes which lead him to consider

recommending suspension of the organisation's certification. He is particularly concerned with the evidence that patient health is being adversely affected by produce

stored beyond its safe consumption date, poor kitchen hygiene and undercooked meals. The DCM says that he cannot make any decisions about these issues in the

absence of the Catering Manager due to illness but will write everything down and report to the Catering Manager.

Which two actions should you take in the context of the audit?

This is a classic case of 'buck-passing' at its finest. The DCM should have the authority to address these critical issues, especially when patient health is at stake.

You know, if they're serving undercooked meals, maybe the auditor should have sampled the food. I bet it was a little 'rare'.

Wait, the Catering Manager is out sick? This sounds like a perfect opportunity for the DCM to step up and take responsibility. I hope he doesn't pull a 'let me check with my boss' move.

Yes, that seems like the most appropriate action to take in this situation.

I think we should call the audit programme managers and recommend suspension of certification.

I agree, the auditor should present the full report and give the organization a reasonable timeframe to implement corrective actions. Rushing to suspend the certification could do more harm than good.

The auditor's findings are concerning, but suspending the certification immediately seems a bit harsh. Shouldn't we give them a chance to address the issues first?
