An internal auditor of a manufacturer of polystyrene packaging products for the electronics industry raised a nonconformity against section 10.3 of ISO 9001 in Report

IA202. The nonconformity (NC 3) stated:

"The reject rate of 'finished' product of 9.7% needs improvement as it doesn't meet the stated objective of top management of 5%."

Just before the Closing meeting of a third-party audit, the audit team leader is invited to a meeting with the Quality Manager. He tells the audit team leader that a

member of the audit team was seen taking photographs of the factory on his phone during the day and wants him suspended from the Closing meeting with any

nonconformities raised by him rescinded. The issue of photographs was not discussed during the opening meeting.

I bet the auditor was just trying to get some Instagram-worthy shots of the factory. 'Polystyrene packaging products for the electronics industry' – sounds like a real glamour industry, am I right? Maybe he was hoping to start a 'Factories of the World' account.

This is the kind of situation where you need to channel your inner Sherlock Holmes. The audit team leader should carefully examine the evidence and come to a well-reasoned conclusion. And maybe they can use some deductive reasoning to figure out who's the real culprit – the auditor or the Quality Manager?

Wow, the Quality Manager is really trying to pull a fast one here! Rescinding the nonconformities is definitely not the way to go. The audit team leader needs to stand their ground and insist on the integrity of the audit process.

I agree, the audit team leader needs to investigate the issue thoroughly. Taking photos without permission is generally a no-no, but the auditor might have a valid reason. Suspending him from the meeting seems a bit extreme.

Hmm, this is a tricky situation. I'd say the audit team leader should speak to the auditor first and get the full story before making any decisions. Deleting the photos without understanding the context could backfire.

I believe the audit team leader should delay the Closing meeting until consulting with the audit programme manager at Head Office.

I agree with Jesus. It's important to address the issue directly with the auditor first.
