I think the answer is A) only UML models including profiles. XMI was originally designed for UML, and while it can handle other types of models, I'm not sure it's as widely used for them.
Hmm, I was leaning towards D) instances of metamodels that can be described by an XML schema. Isn't that the whole point of XMI, to provide an XML-based way to exchange any kind of model?
