The reading of the instrument seems like the most likely to be influenced. I mean, what if the operator squints their eyes and misreads the measurement? That's a recipe for disaster.
I'm going with calibration of the instrument. You can't trust the readings if the tool itself isn't properly calibrated, no matter how careful the operator is.

I think the actual temperature of the liquid is the least likely to influence the measurement of the wooden beams. The instrument should be able to provide accurate readings regardless of the ambient temperature.
