I'm going to have to go with option B. The exactly once guarantee is for the Kafka => External flow, where you want to make sure your downstream systems receive each message exactly once, without any duplicates.
Hmm, I'm not so sure about that. Doesn't the exactly once guarantee apply to the External => Kafka flow as well? I mean, you want to ensure exactly-once processing of data coming from external sources, don't you?
