I bet the Unified Border Element is just going to choose the most cost-effective codec it can transcode to iLBC. It's probably not going to care about audio quality when it can save a few pennies.

User3: Maybe it will choose G.711 U-law for cost-effectiveness.

Wait, what? Isn't iLBC a wideband codec? I thought the Unified Border Element would choose a wideband codec to take advantage of the higher quality. This question is tripping me up!

I think the answer is C) G.729r8. The question doesn't mention anything about the INVITE message preferring a specific codec, so the Unified Border Element will likely choose the default codec that it can transcode to iLBC.

I'm not so sure about that. The question also says a Local Transcoding Interface is allocated, so maybe the Unified Border Element will choose a different codec that it can transcode to iLBC.

Hmm, this is tricky. The question mentions that the outbound dial peer supports only iLBC, so I'm guessing the Unified Border Element will choose that codec for the inbound call leg.
