EFG is a private hospital. It specialises in state-of-the-art laser surgery, an area which has developed rapidly in the last 10 years. Most of thestaff of EFG are used to change, as developments in technology, new surgical techniques and customer demands have changed rapidly during this time. However, in the lastthreeyears the economic recession has had a significant impact upon EFG, with the numbers of private customersreducing and its profits falling sharply.

The Board of Directors has recently announced that it is to restructure the Organization and rationalise some of the services it offers. A small number of staff will be made redundant and those remaining will have to take on extra responsibilities with no extra pay. Also, the current generous overtime payments are to be drastically cut. Many staff have expressed concern at the impact that these changes will have on them.

The Board of Directors hasclearlycommunicated the economic reasons for change to the staff through several meetings and are operating an open door policy, whereby staff can discuss the changes with their line managers at any time.

Which of the following, according to Kotter and Schlesinger, is theMOST likelyreason for resistance among EFG's staff?

Different assessments of the situation? I bet the staff think the Board is just making excuses to line their own pockets. 'Oh, the economy is bad, so we have to cut your overtime?' Yeah, right. I'd be resisting that too!

Low tolerance to change, huh? I guess the EFG staff are a bunch of change-o-phobes. What, they can't handle a little restructuring and pay cuts? Come on, it's not like the hospital is asking them to perform brain surgery with a spoon!

Misunderstanding is definitely a factor here. The Board has tried to communicate the reasons, but the staff may still be unclear on the long-term implications of these changes. Perhaps some more detailed explanations are needed.

I think it's a combination of parochial self-interest and different assessments of the situation. The staff are understandably concerned about their job security and compensation, and may not fully agree with the Board's analysis of the economic situation.

The most likely reason for resistance among EFG's staff is low tolerance to change. With the rapid changes they've experienced in the past, this latest round of restructuring and cutbacks is probably just too much for them to handle.

I believe low tolerance to change could also be a reason for resistance. Some staff may struggle to adapt to the new structure.

I agree with Dong. The staff may be worried about how the changes will affect them personally.

I think the most likely reason for resistance among EFG's staff is parochial self interest.
