I'm going with 'Resource Merge Rule' on this one. If the asset got merged with another one, that could definitely trigger the status change to Retired.

I believe it could also be Inventory to Asset Synchronization causing the status change.

Hmm, I think 'CMDB Rules' is the most likely culprit here. The CMDB is responsible for managing asset status, so a rule change could definitely cause this unexpected change.
