Amazon Exam SOA-C02 Topic 1 Question 76 Discussion

Actual exam question for Amazon's SOA-C02 exam
Question #: 76
Topic #: 1
[All SOA-C02 Questions]

A company has a cluster of Linux Amazon EC2 Spot Instances that read many files from and write many files to attached Amazon Elastic Block Store (Amazon EBS) volumes. The EC2 instances are frequently started and stopped. As part of the process when an EC2 instance starts, an EBS volume is restored from a snapshot.

EBS volumes that are restored from snapshots are experiencing initial performance that is lower than expected. The company's workload needs almost all the provisioned IOPS on the attached EBS volumes. The EC2 instances are unable to support the workload when the performance of the EBS volumes is too low. A SysOps administrator must implement a solution to ensure that the EBS volumes provide the expected performance when they are restored from snapshots.

Which solution will meet these requirements?

Fast snapshot restore is the only option that actually addresses the core issue. The rest are just Band-Aids.

Encrypt the volumes? Why would that help with the initial performance problems? Sounds like a waste of time.

Increasing the read-ahead buffer? That's a bit of a random suggestion. I don't think that's going to solve the performance issues here.

That's a good idea. Pre-warming should help improve the performance.

Use the pre-warming feature to initialize the EBS volumes before attaching them.

Formatting the volumes as XFS might help, but it seems like a lot of extra work. I'd try the fast snapshot restore first.

I agree, it's worth trying before going through the hassle of formatting as XFS.

Option A seems like the way to go. Fast snapshot restore should help get the volumes up to speed quickly.

I agree, FSR should definitely speed up the process of restoring the volumes.

A) Configure fast snapshot restore (FSR) on the snapshots that are used.

Hmm, that's an interesting point. Can you explain why you think option C) is better?

I disagree, I believe option C) Format the EBS volumes as XFS file systems before restoring the snapshots is the way to go.

I think option A) Configure fast snapshot restore (FSR) on the snapshots that are used would be the best solution.
