Definitely A) Running. I can't imagine Auto Scaling being able to do much with instances that are in a Stopped or Preparing state. They need to be active and ready to go.

Hmm, I'm not sure. I would have guessed C) Stopped, since Auto Scaling could potentially bring stopped instances back online when needed. But A) Running makes sense too.
